thief ... stolen from:

heat of the moment (asia) ... video killed the radio star (buggles)
stray cat strut (stray cats) ... blank generation (the voidoids)
run to you (bryan adams) ... refugee (tp/heartbreakers)
dani california (rhcp) ... mary jane's last dance (tp/heartbreakers)
another one bites the dust (queen) ... good times (chic)
my sweet lord (g. harrison) ... he's so fine (chiffons)

what stands out is that like steals from like, e.g., the stray cats were
new-wavy pop-punk and they stole from a harder core punk band; harrison
was 60s pop and he stole from a 60s pop act, rhcp and bryan adams are
both arena rock and they stole from an arena rock act. asia and the
buggles were both 'art rock' acts, etc.

dani california (rhcp) ... mary jane's last dance (tp/heartbreakers)
Lynyrd Skynyrd would like their cut of the money from both of these songs
ripping off Sweet Home Alabama.

hmm.i just listened to "mary jane" and "sweet home" and my untrained ear
couldn't pick up any noteworthy similarities. maybe a musician would say
they have similar note sequences or melodic structures? if so i couldn't
hear them.

Play that Dani California song, and when the skinny heroine dude starts
singing the RHCP version, YOU start singing the Tom Petty lyrics over his
lyrics. You'll hear it.

heat of the moment (asia) ...
I'm dating myself here (ODL), but there was a dude on my dorm floor
that would crank up his early 1980's premious quad sound system and
play Asia every Saturday morning for the listening pleasure of those
who had just gone to sleep listening to Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd,
Jimmy H, Led Zeppelin, etc. He got what was coming one late Friday
night - early Saturday morning is about all I will say about that.

Short version; His parents had to pick him up a couple of days later.
He decided to matriculate elsewhere. He is probably CEO of the company
I work for. See, we did him a BIG FAVOR!

This has what, exactly, to do with Asia or The Buggles?

You people DO understand that Geoff Downes co-wrote and performed on
both The Heat Of The Moment AND Video Killed The Radio Star, right?

"Similarities" do not equal congruence. You would expect that songs
written and performed by the same guy might have some similarities.

Moreover, you cannot "steal" from yourself musically.

true, but in this case the similarities are striking enough to warrant
the 'theft' claim.

iirc, people have been sued for doing that (e.g., you write song x and
sell the pub rights to me, then you write song y, which is substantially
the same - you've now infringed on my pub rights to song x because
you're claiming pub writes to y, which is really x).

No, they're not.

The only thing that's really close is the way John Wetton (Asia's lead
singer) and whoever sings for The Buggles sings the name of each song
in the chorus. Even then the chorus is structured differently.

Which part of might was so unclear that you had to say might again?

It has become apparent to me that you people skim when you read. Which
part of "musically" as opposed to legally was so hard to comprehend?

Secondly, for this to even *remotely* be relevant, you're going to
have to show some sort of legal action by Trevor Horn (or whoever
might own the rights to Video Killed The Radio Star).

are you kidding? i know that "video" predates "heat", but i heard "heat"
first. when i heard "video" for the first time (sometime in 83, right
after "heat" was a big hit), i remember gasping and saying "that
techno-pop act just ripped off Asia!"

It starts from the cadence of the opening lyrics and continues
throughout the stanzas. the vocal melodies are very similar:

stanza 1:

Video:

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through...

Heat:

i never meant to be so bad to you
One thing I said that I would never do...

***************************

stanza 2:

Video:

They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.

Heat:

Do you remember when we used to dance
And incidence arose from circumstance
One thing lead to another we were young
And we would scream together songs unsung
***************************

3:

Video:

And now we meet in an abandoned studio.
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago.
And you remember the jingles used to go.

Heat:

And now you find yourself in 82
The disco hotspots hold no charm for you
You cant concern yourself with bigger things
You catch the pearl and ride the dragons wings

**********************************

heck, he even says "82" in "heat", "52" in "video".

And then after each, they ramp up the music and launch into the choruses.

Even the keyboard flourishes in the middle of the songs sound similar.

no, many artists don't believe in suing (tom petty, eg).
